Picture showing Val’s concept for ‘The Post Office’ production, with the window behind the child’s bed, and the screen in the window for the Indian Shadow Puppetry sequences.

At the heart of this play is a young boy whose imaginative life is celebrated, and who gives Joy to those he meets as the story of the play unfolds even though he has a terminal illness and is facing death. Mixing simplicity with sophistication, the play’s universal appeal has made it a world classic. Gandhi was spellbound by the play in Calcutta in 1917. Anita Desai called it, ‘as modest as a dewdrop, as profound as the ocean’.
